Research and innovation management and commercialization

Objective

Critical Software - the host organization - is a spin-off company from the University of Coimbra, Portugal, andhas been active in the development of technologies and solutions for mission and business critical systems,since 1998 The company has excellent t echnical resources, including many Phd's and Msc's, and a strongresearch investment policy that has already generated innovative research results. The company has more than12 people involved in research and technology development, out of a total of 65 empl oyees.However as opposed to the strong technological know-how (as expected in a spin-off) the company lackscompetencies in technology and innovation management, specially in what concerns the exploitation of resultsfrom research and innovation processes, i.e. the competencies required to turn innovative technologies intoinnovative commercial products.To bring the required competencies into the company, we propose to initiate a knowledge transfer processthrough the MCF program and thereby host an experience d researcher for a period of 24 months. Main targetsof the knowledge transfer process will be the key people involved in technology, innovation, and researchmanagement within the company.The competencies to be transferred include: technology assessment, in tellectual properly management,technology commercialization, business planning, marketing, innovation financing, technology transfer, amongothers.The acquisition of these new competencies has the potential to drive a new stage in the company developmentand enable the creation of innovative products from the considerable research efforts of the company.The MCF fellowship hereby proposed clearly fits the objectives of the Transfer of Knowledge (TOK) action(development scheme) as it proposes to transfer compet encies that are generally recognized to be missing inless-favoured regions of the EU.
