Objective
Prof. Stavros Kassinos has worked on turbulent flow theory, modelling and simulation at Stanford University, the
NASA/Ames Center for Turbulence Research, and at the Center of Integrated Turbulence Simulations
established at Stanford University under the Accelerated Strategic Computing Initiative (ASCI). He also holds a
visiting faculty position at the Air Vehicles Directorate. Wright-Patterson Air Force Laboratory in Dayton, Ohio.
This project aims at the development of a core team at the Engineering School of the University of Cyprus (UCy),
under the leadership of Professor Stavros Kassinos, that will transfer the Structure-Based Turbulence Modelling
(SBM) technology to the European Aerospace, Plasma, and Environmental Fluid Mechanics research
communities. The SBM methodology was developed at Stanford University by Prof. Kassinos and Prof. William
C. Reynolds, and has been identified in the 1998 report of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering as leading
edge research in aerospace simulation tools (Frontiers in Engineering, National Academy Press, 1998). The key
idea in the SBM approach is that the structure of the energy containing turbulence plays a key dynamical role in
turbulent transport and affects important flow features, such as skin friction, heat and mass transfer, flow
separation and reattachment. In SBM a number of one-point turbulence structure tensors have been defined and
used in closures that are "structure-aware"and can therefore do much better in many situations where traditional
turbulence models fail, including strongly rotated flows (turbomachinery), atmospheric dispersion flows, and
MHD turbulence.
This project aims to:
? Apply the SBM approach to technological challenges identified by Europe as thematic priorities in the
areas of Aeronautics and Space, and Global Change and Ecosystems
? Create a critical mass team at the UCy for the further development and refinement of SBM ideas for
engine
