A portable device for Early detection and treatment of Traumatic Brain Injury based on advanced qEEG and HD-TES to prevent major Health problems and specially for use in emergencies and telemedicine

Final Report Summary - EMEREEG (A portable device for Early detection and treatment of Traumatic Brain Injury based on advanced qEEG and HD-TES to prevent major Health problems and specially for use in emergencies and telemedicine.)

Executive Summary:
The objective of EmerEEG is to develop a portable medical device for objective and reliable emergency diagnosis of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and a monitored personalized treatment based on qEEG (quantitative electroencephalography) and HD-TES (High-Definition Transcranial Electrical Stimulation) technology. We have achieved this goal by 1) developing a novel vacuum based helmet device that enables accurate positioning system of up to 32 electrodes in any head size, 2) developing the first integrated instrumentation system that combines both qEEG recording and HD-tES stimulation, 3) developing a data processing system that controls all measurements and data analysis including the algorithm for early detection and treatment of TBI. The project also led to a new patented system for “on-demand” gel delivery and an innovative software platform for remote telemedicine cloud operation of single or multiple devices.

Project Context and Objectives:
The objective of EmerEEG is to develop a portable medical device for objective and reliable emergency diagnosis of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and a monitored personalized treatment based on qEEG (quantitative electroencephalography) and HD-TES (High-Definition Transcranial Electrical Stimulation) technology. We will achieve this by 1) developing a novel vacuum based helmet device that will enable an accurate positioning system of up to 32 electrodes, 2) developing an instrumentation system that will combine qEEG recording and HD-TES treatment, 3) developing a data processing system that will control all measurements and data analysis including the algorithm for early detection and treatment of TBI.

Project Results:
The overall aim of EmerEEG is to progress the development into a device prototype, and to establish a basis for further work to verify and validate the technology, and to develop it further towards market introduction. The project have succeeded in verifying the vacuum based technology patented by Smartbrain to perform beyond anticipated and demonstrates the first sensor placement system that can optimally place electrode on any head size. The instrumentation system developed in the project is also the world’s first integrated EEG and tES system and designed to operate in both dry and wet conditions. The project also led to a new patented system for “on-demand” gel delivery and an innovative software platform for remote telemedicine cloud operation of single or multiple devices.

Potential Impact:
The project has demonstrated that EmerEEG system is a very potent solution that could be the first platform to enable commercial scaled use of portable EEG and tES in a variety of markets and sectors. The system could be the first commercial EEG & tES system to be effective in emergency scenarios.
