Objective
The objective of INTUITIVE is to improve information retrieval from and delivery of a multimedia database.
The project aims to produce:
- a system allowing the "intelligent" formulation of multimedia information queries
- an "intelligent" dialogue system for handling user requests
- improved methods of selecting, navigating, browsing and presenting multimedia information
- a multimodal system for user input, including voice and gesture.
The aim is to complement existing techniques, methods and tools. Great emphasis will be placed on task analysis, dialogue design and multimodal techniques. A general framework for the use of such techniques in multimedia information retrieval and delivery will be proposed.
The approach is to develop methods and tools that:
- incorporate a novel combination of cooperative dialogue management with a task analysis of the information retrieval process
- support browsing and query formulation with graphical maps to guide users' exploration and navigation
- use active system initiatives for query formulation and resolution.
Interaction will be enhanced by a combination of speech and gesture, allowing user query formulation in an economical and natural manner. Output tools will plan the presentation of the best media combination while preserving user choice over output content and delivery format. A linking data dictionary will form the underlying environment for the tools by providing a hypermedia-based layer of information description which implements access to storage devices.
