WFD meets CAP- Opportunities for the future

Objetivo

Water pollution caused by agricultural activities stays one of the most important environmental cerns in the developed countries. On the one hand, agricultural land-use is one major drivers for water pollution and often impedes the achievement of the primary goal of the Water Framework Directive - to achieve the andquot;good statusandquot; of water quality. On the other hand, agricultural production depends strongly on the availability of sufficient water. Although the physical links between agricultural land-use, soil and water pollution are well known, at the political level these fields are mainly dealt with independently and co-operation possibilities are currently mainly unused. In addition, the implementation shortcomings between both policy objectives and actual outcomes is a recent issue on the environmental policy agenda. The implementation of the Water Framework Directive depends strongly on agricultural land use and therefore, on the forthcoming reform process of the CAP, a more environmental friendly agricultural production is needed. Current transformations in both policy fields, the Common Agricultural Policy reform and the new Water Framework Directive, offer a potential to combine the efforts of the two policies that should be used. The ference and the Policy Briefs under the Specific Support Action andquot;CAPandWFDandquot; aim to initiate a process in order to achieve the best synergies between the CAP and the WFD, bringing together the policy makers, decision makers, stakeholders and scientists from both policy areas in order to reach a better understanding of both sides and to develop a common language. Further, the currently unused co-operation and co-ordination opportunities will be identified and further developed.
