Genomics Data Analysis Pipelines with Interactive Visualizations

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - GDAPIV (Genomics Data Analysis Pipelines with Interactive Visualizations)

Reporting period: 2015-02-01 to 2015-06-30

The main objectives of GDAPIV project was to develop a prototype of the web platform for genomics data analysis and interactive visualization (GenX) and to develop an elaborated business plan for it. GenX will enable the life science researcher with instant insight into the genome sequence data and related downstream analyses, allowing interactively modifying and testing the research hypothesis and assessing them in real time, as they arise. This will significantly save time and resources, and it will disrupt the approach to the life science research and related services.
During the project, we have performed several business and technological activities. We have performed an in-depth market analysis, determining customer segment sizes and their geographical distribution. We have identified and contacted several new partners, i.e. potential resellers, strategic partners and investors. We have also explored possible marketing and sales approaches and channels and included related budgets into the business model. Furthermore, we have prepared a business plan, which contains financial data (costs, projections), human resource management, IPR possibilities, risk assessment, operations management and relevant periods.
As per technological activities, we have prepared initial User Experience design for the product: personas use cases, user flows, informational architecture, wireframes and mock-ups. In addition, graphic design activities took place, where we considered the characteristics of target users for the platform (biomedical researchers) and focused on usability and intuitiveness. Moreover, we upgraded the underlying platform back-end to the level where it is more stable and responsive to user-actions on the web interface. In addition, new analysis types are supported and new visualization modules have been developed to facilitate exploratory analysis of big data.
The main deliverable of the project is the feasibility report, which also includes the business plan and presents the results of all activities performed during the project. It includes detailed specification of major GenX components.
We expect to fully develop, test and pilot the software platform in the next two years together with first customers and research partners. After the product is finalized, most effort will be put into commercialization activities (marketing & sales). Most importantly, GenX platform will enable our customers to analyze data faster and thus accelerate the research & development process by 5-10 times. This will influence the drug development market, as new drugs will be earlier accessible to patients. Furthermore, there will be impact on decreasing healthcare costs due to the lower costs of drug development and registration, which will lead to lower cost of drugs on the market. Innovating faster, for our target markets, means being able to register more patents, which translates to competitive advantage. Today, medical diagnosis accounts for about 10% of all medical costs in US ($250B/year), our solution may reduce this cost because of more optimized diagnosis process. Finally, the GenX platform has the potential of accelerating the pace at which the biotechnology industry develops products that benefit society in the areas like biofuels (increased and optimized production of biofuels, enabling to decrease the usage of fossil fues), agriculture (faster crop improvement enabling lower pesticide usage) and environment (better and more innovative remediation of contaminated environments).
