Personally Addressable Integrated Information Network for Airports based on Mobile Readers

Objective

The objective of PAINTAMORESYS is to improve communications within airport buildings by developing an addressable wireless information system for both airport personnel and passengers.

Individuals and groups are currently addressed via loudspeaker announcements. Messages in the system planned will be directly transmitted to individual electronic badges, which will replace boarding cards.

Using infra-red (IR) and radio frequency (RF) technology, PAINTAMORESYS will build on existing work within the MORECO (5051) and MORESYS (5470) projects to increase the range and access speed of badge systems and to exploit the outcome of the WINS (5631) exploratory action. For passive uni-directional communications, RF technology will be used, and IR where bidirectional communication is required.

Results will include prototypes of both the badge and the associated transmitter, IR link equipment for the transmitter, and IR link equipment for the airport buildings.

While being tested within the airport environment, the technology developed will have much wider applications in situations where personalised bi-directional communication is required with minimal audible distraction, such as leisure and retail environments.
