Periodic Reporting for period 2 - EnergyWater (Improving energy efficiency in industrial water processes through benchmarking and benchlearning tools in Europe manufacturing industry.)

Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

The EnergyWater project aims to increase energy efficiency in European manufacturing companies optimising water processes. In order to help companies’ with this objective the EnergyWater project will focus on improve two areas:
1. Reliable information. It is essential that industries know in a simple way that they have massive opportunity increase process efficiency. Having the right information could enable specific measures to be taken. Today’s challenge answers the following questions: how can the industrial sector obtain reliable information about potential improvement of its own processes? How are other companies dealing with the same problems?.
The project proposal to solution to get reliable information will be the Energy Management Self-Assessment (EMSA) web-tool in which a company can undertake self-diagnosis about the efficiency of its own industrial water processes. This tool will not only provide information about the areas in which the company can improve its efficiency, but also information about how other companies are obtaining a better performance under similar circumstances.
2. Skilled providers. Once an industry is committed to implementing energy efficiency measures, it needs providers (energy managers and auditors) who share not only a strong experience in this area but also a services portfolio that gives real solutions to real industrial problems.
Within this objective the EnergyWater project will create an Energy Angels network in which ESCOs, energy managers and auditors, technology suppliers and other energy efficiency specialist meet. This network will be available in the web where the EMSA tool is hosted. Their different services, success stories and scope of activities will be updated on the web. Once the project is finished, EMSA web-tool will be maintained by the Energy Angels networks as a commercial instrument to make their services closer to the industrial sector.
Consequently, the EnergyWater project will remove market barriers increasing industrial energy efficiency.

Within this approach the EnergyWater project has the following objectives:
1. Improve the competitiveness of the EU industrial sector by reducing 20% energy costs in industrial water processes.
2. Identify saving potentials and benchmark energy performance through an Energy Management Self-Assessment (EMSA) collaborative web-tool.
3. Strengthen the energy saving market through the creation of an “Energy Angels” network: facilitating contacts with skilled energy managers and auditors and providing access to support for the implementation and financing of water energy efficiency projects.
4. Improve energy performance in industrial water processes through benchmarking activities and a best practice guide based on real experience case studies.
5. Influence energy efficiency regulation through public authorities’ involvement.

Work performed from the beginning of the project to the end of the period covered by the report and main results achieved so far

Main project ouputs have been:
-Complete analysis of energy efficiency innovative technologies, equipment and processes that can work in the industrial water sector has been done.
-Identification of best practices and lessons learnt from previous projects with similar tasks and aims as EnergyWater.
-EMSA web-tool.
EMSA-web tool is an innovative self-assessment tool brought to the market of energy efficiency improvement, and as such can be the centre of an innovation/product activity.
Additionally the EMSA website is also a platform enabling the contact between companies and energy efficiency experts (Energy Angels).

-Energy Angels network (EAN).
Created for ESCOs and other energy consultant that are offering services such as energy audit, technical and financial assistance to their customers. They are interested in gaining visibility to their potential customers, and accessing to news customers.
-Energy Experts training through:
- In-person training sessions: training sessions of 1.5 or 2 day.
- Workshops: from 2 to 4 hours for local industrials and energy experts.
- Webinars: organised with virtual online tools. 2 hours of duration.
- MOOC online session: online since September 2018, total length: 4 weeks, 11 videos, a forum, a final quiz and a certification if the test is passed successfully.

Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far)

The EnegryWater project aims to improve the competitiveness of the EU industrial sector by reducing 20% energy cost in industrial water process.
To fulfil this ambitious objective the project has created the following tools:
Energy Angels network.

This is network of experts in energy efficiency working to remove barriers in the implementation of energy efficiency measures in European manufacturing industries.
Energy Angels network overarching aims are:
i. To support industry across the European Union to identify and implement energy efficiency measures across industrial water processes.
ii. To bring together energy efficiency stakeholders, including energy efficiency experts, ESCOs, technology suppliers, energy managers and energy auditors throughout the whole of Europe.
iii. To facilitate contact between industry and skilled experts with the objective of providing them with support for the implementation and financing of their energy efficiency projects.
To enable these aims, we will gather energy experts (Energy Angels) from all around Europe to ensure the network has the capacity to respond to energy efficiency challenges regardless of regulatory and language differences across the EU. The 10 partners of the EnergyWater consortium are the first angels of the network and we are looking to grow rapidly to respond to the growing market needs.
Energy Management Self-Assessment (EMSA) web-tool.

The EMSA web tool is an Energy Management Self-Assessment methodology that allows any industrial company to input data and receive an initial energy efficiency evaluation. This evaluation will be based on quantitative and qualitative data about their water processes. Results obtained include:
Initial energy efficiency assessment.
Benchmarking and ranking position between industrial companies by sector, size, country, etc.
List of improvement actions.
List of related Energy Angels with required knowledge.

Additionally 7 training sessions will be held from October to December 2017 by the partners of the EnergyWater project in Europe. The two main goals of this training sessions are to:
- Foster the development of the Energy Angel network by training future Energy Angels on the EMSA web-tool.
- Provide specific knowledge to energy experts on the energy efficiency of water processes in the industry;
The certification issued at the end of the training session will be important for professionals willing to become Energy Angels providing the service 1 (EA1) to companies: “EMSA web-tool support”.
The audience will be composed of professionals with proven background in energy efficiency who are interested in joining the Energy Angels network:
- Professionals providing services to manufacturing companies such as auditors, workers in ESCO’s or energy consultants.
- Professionals working in the manufacturing sector such as energy managers (Energy, Quality Assurance, Maintenance, Environment or Management).
