Exploitable results

Research has been concentrated on T91 steels in the form of thick plates and on the behaviour of welds in hydrogen atmospheres. Acceptable properties were confirmed in plates up to 300 mm thick and the weldability was shown to be equivalent to that of 2.25 chromium1molybdenum steel which is the current standard. Weld toughness was high and resistance to hydrogen embrittlement was superior but the creep resistance of welded samples of T91 steel was inferior to the reference material. Therefore the T91 steel has the ability to withstand service temperatures up to 550 C compared with 450 C maximum for the lower alloy steel.
