Critical Raw materials Elimination by a top-down Approach To hydrogen and Electricity generation

Organisation of a workshop on AEM- and BM-based devices for electrochemical energy conversion

A workshop on AEM- and BM-based devices for electrochemical energy conversion with expected audience of 80-150 participants will have taken place or will have been announced and planned at M36. A website will inform on the workshop date, place and program.

Supply of BMs with proven ex situ properties for testing in BMFC and BMEL

The AEI ionomers developped by TECHNION, the bipolar membranes developed from such AEI combined with proton exchange membrane (FUMA, CNRS) and possibly with an interlayer of amphoteric polymers (UNITOV) will lead to a range of novel bipolar membranes (BM). These novel BMs will be characterized ex situ in identical conditions and the most promising one(s) at M27 will be supplied to WP5 for fabrication of BMFC and BMEL with the CRM-free catalysts developped in CREATE. The demonstrator will include at least one BM for a BMEL device and one BM for a BMFC device, with conductivity and stability characterized ex situ

First generation of AEM and AEI materials for AEMFC and AEMEL

First selection of AEI and AEM synthesized within CREATE and showing sufficient conductivity and stability for being used as a first generation of materials for short-term testing the catalysts in AEMFC and AEMEL. The conductivity and stability of this first generation of AEM and AEI will have been verified ex situ before being sent to WP5.

Second generation of AEM and AEI materials for improved AEMFC and AEMEL devices

second generation of AEI and AEM synthesized within CREATE and showing sufficient conductivity and stability for being used for testing the catalysts in AEMFC and AEMEL. The conductivity and stability of these AEM and AEI will have been verified ex situ before being sent to WP5. The second generation of AEM and AEI should moreover have reached the target set in MS1 (M20) : AEMs with alkaline stability at 60 °C > 400 h & AEI conductivity > 3 S m-1 at 100% RH

The document will report on the conductivity and stability properties obtained with the optimized AEM and AEI developped during CREATE. While the full synthesis and structural characterization of these optimized materials will probably not be divulgated in this public report for IP reasons, the conductivity and stability of these optimized AEM and AEI will. These properties will have been measured ex situ and also in situ in AEMFC and/or AEMEL.

The report will extensively describe the different metal@carbon materials prepared and electrochemically tested for the HER reaction in liquid electrolyte and, for selected catalysts, at the cathode of BMEL.

CRM-free metal oxides as OER catalysts: synthesis, characterization and performance in AEMEL & BMEL

The report will extensively describe the different metal oxide materials prepared and electrochemically tested for the OER reaction in liquid electorlyte and, for selected catalysts, at the anode of AEMEL and BMEL.

CRM-free Metal-N-C materials as ORR catalysts: synthesis, characterization and performance in AEMFC & BMFC

The report will extensively describe the different Metal-N-C materials prepared and electrochemically tested for the ORR reaction in liquid electorlyte and, for selected catalysts, at the cathode of AEMFC and BMFC.

Publication on the implementation of CRM-free catalysts in polymer electrolyte EL and FC

The document will be a scientific manuscript ready for submission reporting on the challenge and possibilities with CRM-free catalysts for low temperature electrolyzers and fuel cells. While the document is intended as a review paper, specific examples and learnings acquired during CREATE will illustrate the review paper, highlighting where and how the state of art of the field could be moved forward during the project.

CRM-free metal/metal (oxy)hydroxides as HOR / HER catalysts: synthesis, characterization and performance in AEMFC & AEMEL

The report will extensively describe the different metal/metal(oxy)hydroxides prepared and electrochemically tested for the HER/HOR reaction in liquid electrolyte and, for selected catalysts, at the negative electrode of AEMEL and AEMFC.
