Objetivo
Optimization of a process for the treatment of blast furnace sludges with a view to their recycling for the agglomeration of iron ores, which will be economically acceptable and which will avoid the dumping of the Zn/Pb wastes.
In general terms, the treatment process appears to be simple and flexible. It involves only conventional equipment. The capital charges appear to be acceptable, even in the case of small-capacity plants. Under the present economic conditions in Belgium the recycling process does not, however, appear to be competitive when compared with controlled dumping (costs varying from single to double).
Until now, zinc- and lead-bearing wastes resulting from the removal of dust from gases from blast furnaces and steelworks have been eliminated by dumping. Even if it is a question for some of a long term view, the shortage of sites, the deterrent effect of the cost, and growing ecological constraints are arguments in favour of the development of treatment processes and recycling. The treatment line advocated by CRM/CEBEDEAU makes use of hydrometallurgy in an acidic environment.
The first characteristic of the process is the utilization, as a leaching reagent, of another waste produced in integrated iron and steel manufacture, namely, liquor from spent hydrochloric pickling baths, The second characteristic is to carry out a more selective solubilization of Zn/Pb/alkali compounds (but also Ca and Mg) in an acidic environment, with the exclusion of iron oxides, by creating, on the contrary, favourable conditions in this solubilization environment for the precipitation of iron in spent pickling bath liquor (in the form of goethite) and, as a consequence, the enrichment of iron in the waste, for recycling for the agglomeration of iron ore.
There are two successive phases of laboratory work.
Phase I
Verification of the basic reactions in batch reactors with the objectives of confirming the feasibility of the initially proposed flow-sheet, of defining the main operating conditions, and of establishing the order of magnitude of the yields from the various reactions.
Presentation of preliminary economic data.
Phase II
Optimization of the reactions and the physico-chemical unit operations, selection of a final flow-sheet, and the construction of a small continuous treatment plant.
The establishment of a more accurate economic appraisal.
