Reduction of noise from plasma torch used in continuous-casting tundish

Objective

The project work had as first target the general acoustic characterisation of plasma torches system; in a second time peculiar acoustic reclamations were individualised and subsequently carried out in according to the examined plant.
The first objective has been realised carrying out a series of environmental noisiness measurements together with a simple acoustic model that enabled to point out the characteristics peak frequencies and the corresponding acoustic levels. In this way an average characteristics spectrum of the acoustic power emitted by the plasma torche source has been made; this spectrum can also be a reference for prevision about acoustic effects on different plants where the same thermic control system will be installed.

The second aim has been reached through the formulation of a simple system simulation model of acoustic effects on the surrounding areas together with intervention proposals concerning the tundish structure and geometry.

The progressive accomplishment of the solutions applicable to the plant engineering reality made possible to reduce the original total noisiness values from over 90 dBA to 81 / 82 dBA. These values are near the upper limits recommended by EEC directive n. 188 May 1986 concerning protection of work areas.
The research project will be broken down into the following phases:

Phase 1: Research on and quantification of noise sources

A phonometric survey will be performed to acquire the information needed to frame corrective action to be undertaken and to have comparative data for subsequent test work. Should the need arise intersymmetrical analysis may also be performed to identify possible preferential noise-propagation paths.

Phase 2: Analysis of plant operation and maintenance aspects

All necessary information will be collected to ensure that solution of the noise problem does not introduce others that are even more serious. Hence the functional aspects will be analysed, namely those bound up with the operator-plant relationship, while as regards the maintenance aspects, these will be tackled from two diverse aspects:

- plant-maintenance requirements
- life and maintenance of the noise-abatement works.

Plant data will be acquired through meetings with plant management and via the collection of photographic documentation and video-recordings.

Phase 3: Definition of abatement measures

All of the data collected will be processed or analysed to identify one or more possible solutions.

Phase 4: Implementation of abatement measures: noise tests

All the noise-abatement measures identified in the preceding phases will be implemented and a new series of tests will be run to check on their effectiveness.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
