In-depth support for innovation and exploitation in Smart Systems Integration

Periodic Reporting for period 2 - inSSIght (In-depth support for innovation and exploitation in Smart Systems Integration)

Période du rapport: 2018-01-01 au 2018-12-31

The objective of inSSIght was to support and complement R&I activities in Smart Systems Integration (SSI) by structuring industrial cooperation and facilitating end-user adoption for the next generations of miniaturised smart objects and systems.
Previous CSAs have revealed the immense breadth of SSI in its technology demands, its application sectors, its business ramifications, its provider and user communities, and have commenced the task of joining all these aspects for concerted action. They have also developed support tools, whose proven value can continue to be instrumental in the new CSA.
Building on the above and supporting the strategic activities of EPoSS, the role for inSSIght was to deepen and implant this understanding through a cadre of influential partners from SSI-related clusters, research institutes and industries who defined and encouraged actions to unlock and exploit innovation opportunities, provided practice-oriented support to the SSI ecosystem, underlined the vital position of SSI as a Key Enabling Technology for competitive advantage and future innovation, and gave credit to their enabling role as building blocks in sectors with high potential for growth and high return on investment, such as IoT, Industry 4.0 electric mobility, automated driving, smart medical devices etc. Special attention has been brought to the Micro-Nano-Bio sector, including the Health aspects, as it implies different value chains and more complex processes and pathways for market introduction, notably due to the strong regulation in this sector and the multiplicity of parties (users, beneficiaries, payers, regulators, procurers, prescribers).

inSSIght brought together a consortium of partners including
1) a “core group” of 10 partners with expertise from previous or on-going actions and able to capitalise on their results
2) an “industry board” of 8 leading SSI companies covering 7 priority application sectors and able to assure the link with the demand side as well as with the industrial strategies and initiatives for SSI such as ECSEL
3) 3 boards of associated partners (15 RTOs, 6 Clusters, 10 ETPs), guaranteeing a broad sectoral and vertical anchorage for retrieving emerging needs and requirements of end users, for aligning actions with research and educational priorities as well as for reach out and dissemination

inSSIght was organised along the following 6 action lines:
1) Investigate
• Analyse emerging needs of end users and changing requirements for customer acceptance
• Provide digested information as input for other WPs to conduct their work
2) Strengthen
• Support, train, enlarge and internationalise SSI ecosystem
• Foster cooperation
• Provide tools and events for community building and networking
3) Lead
• Elaborate White Paper
• Impact durably stakeholders in and beyond SSI
4) Attract
• Increase awareness on benefits and potentials of smart systems based solutions
• Organise demonstration workshops as showrooms to increase visibility of SSI
• Connect developers and users in selected sectors
5) Promote
• Provide communication & dissemination material
• Implement marketing strategy
6) Engage MNBS
• Plug in to each of above mentioned activities considering MNBS specificities
• Interface with other Health related EU initiatives

inSSIght has proven to be a successful project generating tangible results and positive impact by providing the SSI ecosystem with a set of tools and services such as the SSI Trademark, numerous showcases, webinars, and last but not least a White Paper including strategic recommendations covering the intersection of the views of target ecosystem stakeholders and how the relevant innovation factors should be addressed to unlock opportunities.
The success of inSSIght primarily relies on the outstanding contributions from its core and associated partners but beyond that on their ability to engage with key stakeholders in selected application areas.
In summary, during the whole project duration, important basic work of the project was successfully performed in all WPs:
• WP1: efficient management and coordination
• WP2: analysis of the state of the art, information gathering and information digestion to feed in other WPs
• WP3: organisation of numerous community building, networking, brokerage events; extension of capability radar with now 1242 dots; catalogue of best practices to increase SME engagement; brainstorming sessions for future joint proposals; 4 technical webinars (>240 participants)
• WP4: organisation of 5 Comprehension and Distillation Workshops as input to / validation of Customised Innovation Priorities and White Paper
• WP5: organisation of 7 interactive webinars (>400 participants) and 2 Open Lab like workshop (>175 participants); analysis of newcomers’ interests based on 450 feedbacks; organisation of regular meetings with regulators and procurers; promotion of 89 demonstrators
• WP6: launch, management and promotion of the European Community Trademark Smart Systems Integrated®; roll out of promotional campaigns (>100 posts in social media); provision of communication & dissemination tools and material; analysis of ecosystem’s visibility needs; promotion of SSI in ECSEL (10 workshops organised)
• WP7: report on the MNBS ecosystem, and the gathering, analysis and provision of 21 MNBS showcases and use cases to WP5 and of MNBS-specific recommendations to WP4

Numerous achievements of inSSIght will survive the end of the project and still be available:
• Knowledge Gateway: https://express-ca.eu/public/ecosystem-knowledge-gateway
• Trademark: https://ssi-trademark.org
• Webinar recordings: http://inssight.eu/webinars

Furthermore the strategic process that took place to better address innovation factors and collaborate with the demand side as well as to engage with SMEs will find echo in the upcoming activities of EPoSS (www.smart-systems-integration.org) and of ECSEL (www.ecsel.eu).
In addition to covering the impacts set out in the work programme, the network of partners with their different backgrounds and affiliations significantly contributed to European welfare and well-being by encouraging:
• European economic growth and employment by turning innovation opportunities into concrete market shares, competitive advantage, increased turnover and qualified jobs in the SSI sector but especially in priority application sectors: Mobility, Healthy living, manufacturing, communications, energy, natural resources and safety & security (Impact 1)
• well-being of European citizens by enabling the emergence of future smart systems based products supporting the societal needs of safety, fairness, fastness, affordability, pleasure, sustainability, fashionability, user-friendliness, productivity, painlessness, effectivity and efficiency (Impact 2)
• structuring of new value chains and ecosystems composed of highly qualified organisations and individuals able to adapt to the emergence of new needs and changing requirements by appropriating and reproducing the best practices developed by inSSIght (Impact 3)
• general perception of Smart Systems as indispensable component for innovation (Impact 4)
• Future public, corporate and private investments for SSI (Impact 5)
