Special Action in Microelectronics for Italy: Microelectronics Promotion in Italy

Objective

The Special Action for Microelectronics in Italy aims to:

- demonstrate to the largest possible number of SMEs the capabilities of ICs (particularly those based on advanced multifunction/high speed technologies) and the opportunities they offer for developing innovative products in a wide range of application fields
- consolidate cooperation between academia and SMEs through encouraging the joint fabrication of prototype circuits of considerable industrial interest.

To reach these objectives, the Action draws on the experience and initial results obtained in the ESPRIT II Special Action I-SMILE (5085). The scope of this is now extended in terms of both the number of SMEs that will be trained and assisted in the design and testing of ICs, as well as the spectrum of technologies to be made available through technology transfer actions.

The approach taken consists of:

- dissemination of basic microelectronic technologies to inexperienced SMEs through seminars, training courses and workshops, in coordination with the activities planned within I-SMILE.
- fabrication of several ASICs demonstrators based on the use of advanced and flexible technologies (eg BiCMOS, non-volatile logic, smart power, sensors, gallium arsenide) by SMEs currently using separate components or circuits in their subsystems
- reinforcement of existing national centres acting as centres of competence and supporting SMEs in the design, testing and qualification phases of ICs as well as in the choice of the most suitable advanced packaging and assembling techniques.

IMPLEMENTATION

The Special Action in Microelectronics for Italy is implemented, along similar lines, through two projects: MEPI (7500), focusing on SMEs in central and northern Italy and on the strengthening of centres of competence, and SUMIS (7517), addressing the particular needs of SMEs in southern Italy. In the execution of the work, the best use of resources is ensured through coordination and synergy of effort between the two projects, as well as through cooperation with the Italian National Research Council.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
