European Distributed Information Technology for Health Care

Objective

The EDITH initiative aims to integrate, exploit and apply the results of different ESPRIT projects in the area of healthcare and distributed systems. EDITH will further develop these results to permit a more complete and integrated support of users' requirements. Within the framework of the overall EDITH initiative, several autonomous national special actions are cooperating; each will be carried out according to specific national requirements.

The work-programme for the overall EDITH initiative identifies the main technical and organisational activities needed to both deliver advanced and mutually consistent components of an eventually complete hospital information system, and also to facilitate their use in the hospital working environment. As a consequence, the EDITH framework will not only represent a common basis for the national actions cooperating in the present phase (Ireland, Italy and Portugal in 7509, Hospital2000), but will also provide guidelines for additional initiatives which may be carried out in other Community member states and/or by different organisations.

The projects aim at realising working prototypes of an integrated environment, based on the main components: a distributed platform, an organisational and architectural framework, and a set of mutually consisting prototypical applications and common services. These prototypes will represent part of a larger concept for European Hospital Information Systems. The framework will be consistent with international standardisation and with the results of earlier ESPRIT projects. The approach includes the experimentation, as well as the demonstration and promotion of the achieved results.

A significant effort is also reserved in each national action for disseminating the results and facilitating the exploitation of the applications by potential external users through workshops, round-tables and seminars.

Each national action cooperating in the EDITH initiative is carried out by an autonomous national consortium comprising industrial and hospital organisations. Several committees operating at international level manage cooperation among the consortia, and ensure the coevolution of the individual national actions by harmonising technical and architectural decisions and arranging for the joint exploitation and promotion of results. EDITH will also cooperate with, amongst others, the Stichting Groupe Riche, the RICHE follow-up projects (such as the AIM project 2025, NUCLEUS), and other projects in AIM and other programmes.
