Objective
This Action aims to enlarge the potential participation of organisations from eastern Germany in multimedia R&D within ESPRIT and to increase their ability to make use of existing results.
Its objectives are to:
-develop an economically viable prototype application that stimulates the dissemination and preservation of the European cultural heritage
-propose appropriate standards in order to harmonise similar applications in Europe and elsewhere
-generate business opportunities for providers of hardware and software and for the electronic publishing industry.
The work will be carried out in close cooperation with the corresponding actions in Greece (MULTICULTURE-GR, 7521) and Italy (MULTICULTURE-I, 7523).
The approach will be to:
-General: select or define standards and address the copyright issues.
-Data capture: apply the results of existing ESPRIT projects to the 3-D modelling of the Pergamon altar and the sculptures around it.
-Database implementation and information retrieval: select and implement an appropriate image database system (IDBS), select at least two different target fields for filling the IDBS, and define information retrieval procedures using content-descriptivefeatures related to the chosen applications.
-Applications: these will include 3-D modelling of the Pergamon altar, the capture of high volumes of pictorial information using a proven mobile cost-effective high-resolution colour system, the definition of interfaces to electronic publishing and retr ieval systems, and recommendations for the dissemination of the approved data capture strategy.
