Project description
Remote monitoring system for early detection of forest disease
In 1999, the devastating pinewood nematode first appeared in the forests of Portugal. Causing deadly pine wilt disease, it jeopardises the security of forests and economic activities. Great efforts have been made to eliminate the infestation because its spread poses a major threat to forests throughout Europe. To address this issue, the EU-funded FOCUS project will devise a remote forest monitoring system that integrates satellite imagery from the Copernicus programme with high-resolution data captured by drones. The resulting maps will provide forest managers with timely information on forest health and vulnerable locations, so they can quickly remove infected trees and prevent further spread of the disease.
Objective
FOCUS is a proposed H2020 project aimed at demonstrating an innovative extension of an existing forest monitoring service (www.silvisense.com) using a combination of Copernicus Sentinel-2 imagery with hyperspectral data captured by UAV platforms.
