Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

The overall goal of this project is the upscaling of an L-category vehicle technology platform (L-EV), that is now being applied to electric Tuk Tuks (eTuks). Tuk Tuks are already a well-known charming means of 3-wheeler transportation in many countries, especially in Asia, with many different applications. However, these traditional models run mostly on diesel and are considerably less environmentally friendly than their electric counterparts, and rather noisy as well.

Current customers regularly ask for variations on the eTuk concept for the tourist and leisure markets, mostly requesting more seats and capacity. Hence, this calls for an in-depth market research to explore the most promising business applications and related risks. Specific objectives in this SMEINST Phase 1 feasibility study were:
- Explore promising business cases for the new KTX-20 platform with customers.
- Evaluate the required specifications and characteristics of found applications.
- Elaborate on a detailed business plan [D1].

Work performed from the beginning of the project to the end of the period covered by the report and main results achieved so far

During this project, TTH evaluated various economic, legal, and technical risks, opportunities, and aspects, leading to the definition of 6 business opportunities the company can focus on. Further validation and evaluation of the business opportunities has lead to a ranking and a detailed business plan on how the scale up the KTX-20 technology and on what market segments to focus when commercializing it.

Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far)

TTH has crafted a highly innovative version of the successful 6 year old technology platform called “KTX-20”. It is lighter, more efficient, has a lower TCO, can host either 3 or 4 wheels, and is ready for mass production. It allows modular sizing in length and in width and scaling of batteries, and fits the upcoming EU and Asian legislations for road vehicle. This platform allows ultimate modular scalability to support a mere endless variation of L-EV models, and has a proven potential for upscaling L-EVs on a global level. In this project, TTH has researched the most interesting business cases for scale-up and worked on a detailed business plan. Societal implications of scale-up would primarily lie in the reduction in CO2 emission, specifically in urban areas - leading to less health problems due to air pollution and fine dust particles.
