Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

The goal of COQUDDE is improvement of understanding of dense dipolar ensembles, in particular their response in the limit where quantum dynamics becomes important. This is an important topic since both naturally occuring materials, and newly synthesized artificial materials exhibit optical response in the dense dipolar regime. Overall objective is take new experimental platforms, and extend their use and theoretical understanding, closely connecting experimental development and data analysis with theoretical developments.

Work performed from the beginning of the project to the end of the period covered by the report and main results achieved so far

COQUDDE provided new framework for measuring atom-surface interactions in presence of strong dipole-dipole interactions, pointed the way to reachable experimental measurements under realistic existing conditions in cold atom dense dipolar samples, analysed data in the first realisations of such experiments, and stimulated with this data pushed development of new theoretical models. Further development of Rydberg interactions calculations was undertaken. Finally, the project included ambitious and innovative outreach and education strategy, through creation of a community web platform ResearchX3D.com . Action results are disseminated as three papers and two open-source codes as of date of this report.

Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far)

COQUDDE explored theoretically tractable dense dipolar regimes reachable with current experimental setups, and allowed analysis of these results, resulting in some of the first examples of close comparisons between theory and existing experiments in dense dipolar regime. The identified discrepancies stimulated further research, and will be detailed in two more papers and one open-source code planned after the date of this report, that will hopefully contribute to even more precise analysis of dense dipolar systems in the future. Publication of open-source codes and their extensive documentation with examples allows for easy uptake of these results by other researchers. ResearchX3D.com outreach and education platform is expected to have a wide impact in facilitating access to experimental design ideas, sharing expertise in this domain.
