Project description
Innovative technology to keep trains on track – to save time
Positioning systems drive trains today by providing precise and reliable information using sensors that collect critical data. The EU-funded RPS project proposes a new radar positioning system (RPS) based on two devices. The first is the RPS Radar, which is a high-frequency radar installed on the train that obtains a detailed ground profile, and the second is the RPS Balises, which is a set of plastic pieces attached to certain railway sleepers. For instance, the project’s Efficient Speed Control service will allow metro and railway operators to establish an optimal map of speeds for their trains. This will allow them to adapt train speed to the optimal energy consumption instead of using sections at a constant speed as is currently done.
