Application Management Environments and Support

Objective

The AMES project aims at providing methods and tools for an effective support of application management.

"Application management" is the contracted responsibility for the management and execution of all activities related to the maintenance and evolution of existing applications, within well-defined service levels. Application management covers very different activities. The most critical of them are: application and program understanding, problem understanding and management, risk and impact analysis, and configuration management. Most of these activities are not supported or only partially supported by existing tools.

The project's objectives are therefore to provide support for application management, providing the user with the following:

Methodological framework

This includes methodological guides for the individual use of the tools provided by the project, as well as a methodological approach for using them together and concurrently with complementary commercial off-the-shelf tools, within the frame of an Application Management Process Model; models for process and product evaluation will be also provided.

Toolset

This will support several of the most critical activities of application management (application and program understanding, impact analysis). AMES tools will not be developed from scratch, but be built on existing results, both from several previous European R&D projects and partners' backgrounds; special attention will be paid to the applicability of these tools to multiple application domains.

Flexible integration infrastructure

Built on top of the EPSOM traceability platform, to ensure interoperability not only between the tools provided by the project, but also with existing commercial off-the-shelf tools, and existing CASE environments. This infrastructure will, in particular, offer facilities for control integration.

Integrated AM environments

These will be dedicated to two specific application domains: aerospace C-oriented applications, and business COBOL-oriented applications.

The project is strongly committed to the effective application of its results: several real application cases will be used for experimentation and validation of the methods and tools proposed by the project. Great attention is paid to the dissemination and the effective use of the results both within and outside the companies involved in the consortium.
