Project description
Composite materials for lighter, more cost-efficient and eco-friendly regional aircraft
The EU has outlined ambitious goals for making air transport more environmentally friendly. Solutions that promote the use of advanced lightweight composite materials will result in less fuel consumption and air pollution. The EU-funded SPARE project aims to fabricate two full-scale passenger and cargo floor grids for regional aircraft fuselage. They will be manufactured using carbon fibre-reinforced thermoplastic composites. The floor grids will then be installed in fuselage demonstrators for on-ground testing. Two innovative technologies, progressive roll forming and induction welding, will be used to reduce weight and recurring costs compared to conventional metal and thermoset composite solutions.
Objective
The Project addresses the manufacturing of 2 full shipsets of pax and cargo floor grids for regional Aircraft Fuselage barrel on .ground demostrators using thermoplastic resin reinforced with carbon fiber. The use of manufacturing technologies with a lot of potential for automation will be explored (i.e. Progressive Roll Forming and Induction welding) in order to be competitive in terms of weight saving and recurring cost reduction.
