Objective
Hose reel irrigation systems are a type of sprinkler irrigation that is portable and adapts to fields irregularly shaped or with obstacles. Farmers are increasingly demanding hose reel irrigators with long hoses (up to 1,000 m) but the high friction between the hose and the ground is troublesome and make it necessary to use heavy tractors and thick hoses. The energy for pumping water (and hence operation costs, fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions) directly depends on the thickness of the hose. Breakdowns and lifespan are also related to friction because it is the responsible for traction efforts on the hose and wear and tear. Irriland has over 24 years of experience in automatic hose reel irrigators, being one of the world leaders in the sector. In 2013, and based on the client’s feedback, Irriland started developing PROTECTOR. This is a disruptive and robust technology which, neither adding difficulties nor delaying the process, reduces 90% of friction between the hose and the ground. The energy consumption is therefore reduced (around 22% for pumping water and 40% for deploying and removing the hose) as well as greenhouse gas emission (around 20%). Half the plastic is used in hoses, which turn more manageable and double their lifespan (20 years instead of 10). At the same time, all breakdowns caused by tractor efforts are avoided and irrigation is possible in more conditions (rainy times, muddy grounds, etc.). We have patented our technology in our main target markets and 22 irrigation systems sellers or farmer have explicitly shown their interest in the project. With PROTECTOR we forecast an accumulated sales revenue of € 10 million by 2024 with net profits of € 3.5 million by that same year. Our headcount will increase with 26 new direct jobs and we will consolidate our position in irrigation and will lead the way towards more efficient and sustainable hose reel irrigation.
