Cognibotics: driving the revolution in accurate robotic machining

Project description

New add-on for improved industrial robot accuracy

The recent growth in the robotic system integration industry has led to fierce competition, driving competitors to seek novel solutions. Currently, industrial robots require a minimum accuracy of 0.2 mm to be used in metal machining. Unfortunately, it is difficult for specialised machines to achieve this accuracy. In this context, the EU-funded AROBMACH project will bring to market Millbot, an add-on solution. It can be incorporated into industrial robots for a minimum accuracy of 0.2mm combining the accuracy of a computer numerical control machine system with the cost-efficiency, durability and adaptability of industrial robots. This project could offer substantial advantages in competing not only within Europe but also globally.

Objective

Cognibotics develops and plans to commercialize Millbot – an add-on solution to be used in industrial robots that enables them to reach the minimum accuracy (0.2 mm). The accuracy of 0.2 mm is considered the threshold for wide adaptation of industrial robots in metal machining. By commercializing a unique solution that enables to combine the advantages of CNC machine systems (high accuracy) and industrial robots (low-price, small size, great reachability and flexibility, better cycle time) Cognibotics will position itself as a game changer and will create its own niche on the market. Cognibotis is a spin-off company from Lund University. We have been present in the robot industry since 2014 providing consulting services and technical discussions with leading robot manufacturers such as ABB, Comau and KUKA. During these years, we have gained an extensive knowledge about the market and its needs as well as built a considerable network of partners and KOLs. The collected knowledge, experience and contacts within the industry will be the base for the successful commercialisation of Millbot. In the Phase 1 project, we will define the business plan that will guide our commercialization activities of Millbot - the company´s first own product. In order to maximise the commercial potential of Millbot (as it will be an add-on solution that can be used in multi-brand industrial robots), it will be initially sold to the robot system integrators. Due to an extremely intensive market competition, the integrators are actively looking for technical innovations that will enable them to gain a competitive advantage. Our solution will also provide the EU-added value by creating the possibility for the European industrial robot manufacturers to grow rapidly and win competition over the Asian players. Millbot has a great potential to positively impact productivity and competitiveness of the EU:s industry and increase number of the high-qualified jobs within the EU.
