AqFresh: High-Performance Odour and VOC Management Innovation with Demonstrated Potential in Many Addressable Markets

Project description

Eliminating what the nose knows – and even what it does not

Air fresheners and ‘odour eaters’ have been around for years, working to eliminate the lingering smell of freshly fried fish, sweaty athletic shoes or a cat’s litter box, but most are rather ineffective. The UK SME Aqdot has developed AqFresh, a revolutionary technology that uses the supramolecular chemistry of cage-like molecules to capture and neutralise compounds responsible for odours and pollution as well as allergens and viruses without any harm to human cells. The EU-funded AqFresh project is helping the team prepare the business plan to take their product to market in numerous application scenarios.

Objective

Odours can lead to discomfort, embarrassment, and strongly affects mood, cognition and behaviour. Hence there are the many
scenarios where removing malodours is highly desirable for a sense of clean and freshness, or is vital to ensure consistency of
operation. The market for products with odour-eliminating capabilities is long established with an enormous range of applications
and variations. However, these almost always rely on either overpowering the odour with fragrance temporarily or enduring less
effective solutions currently available, both of which simply fail to effectively remove odours for long lasting effect. AqFresh is a
ground-breaking innovation that removes odours and volatile organic compounds with high efficacy. Its flexible format allows it to
be deployed in a range of product formats across industries and markets from deodorants to air filters which have not been able to
benefit from a highly effective malodour removal technology before. The project will allow us to continue building the business case
to accelerate the scale up of this true innovation with global reach and scaling impact.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

SME-1 - SME instrument phase 1

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
