Light and Organic Nanotechnology for Cardiovascular Disease

Project description

An implantable device for restoring cardiac function

Cardiovascular disorders often lead to heart failure (HF), with a negative impact on quality of life and a huge socioeconomic cost. Currently, there is no medication to reverse cardiac damage, with heart transplantation being the only option for HF. The EU-funded LION-HEARTED project has developed a novel technology that combines light and nanotechnology to restore cardiac function and vascularisation. The strategy involves biocompatible phototransducers that trigger biological pathways relevant to cardiac repair in cardiac progenitors. Researchers aim to generate a breakthrough implantable device that can restore cardiovascular function and rescue systemic blood perfusion.
