Accelerating market introduction of Active Noise Cancelling headrest solutions

Project description

New device cancels noise

Noise is a stressor. It affects our circulation largely unconsciously via the autonomic nervous system. The demand for insulation materials is increasing. In this context, the EU-funded recalm ANC headrest project proposes a health promoting acoustic device that is integrated into seats. The device cancels noise by emitting an anti-sound signal. It also allows an active noise compensation (ANC) in the ‘far field’ without headphones. According to the project, cars and commercial vehicles, as well as public transport and aeroplanes, can be equipped with this device. The focus of the first phase of the project is to target the construction and agricultural machinery market in Germany.

Objective

Worldwide, 1 bn people are at great risk of being hearing impaired. The increasing noise pollution in everyday life results in an unwanted
restriction of the quality of life. Noise is a stressor that affects our circulation largely unconsciously via the autonomic nervous system. In the
frequency range below 1 kHz, the demand for insulation materials is increasing strongly. Therefore, the lack of space for and increasing cost
of passive noise insulation is not an adequate solution in off-highway machines, commercial vehicles, trucks/cars, airplanes/public
transportation. Wearing headphones is not an option for comfort, safety and health reasons.

To counteract the stress and danger factors of noise, recalm is developing a health-promoting acoustic device that is integrated into seats.
By emitting an anti-sound signal, noise is canceled out by means of destructive interference. Unique features of the product can be stated as
follows: the device allows an active noise compensation (ANC) in the “far field” - without headphones. As a result, recalm is the first company to
offer active noise reduction in the far field in Off Highway Machines. Extensive research and initial discussions with potential customers and
cooperation partners from this industry underline the urgent need in the market.

In the long term, cars and commercial vehicles as well as public transport and airplanes are to be equipped. Here the worldwide market potential
amounts to EUR 312.4 billion per year. For the market entry, however, the focus is on the construction and agricultural machinery market in
Germany. Extensive research and initial discussions with potential customers and cooperation partners from this industry underline the urgent
need in the market. The annual market potential amounts to 1.7 billion EUR worldwide.

In order to accelerate the market entry, but also to identify additional features for the product, a beta test with drivers of construction machinery
should be carried out.
