Understanding the physiological mechanisms of fishes in conditions of environmental stress

Global climate change leads to a set of environmental stressors in marine environments, such as intense hypoxia and acute warming. These effects challenge the animals’ capacity to provide sufficient O2 to respiring tissues impacting their levels of tolerance. The EU-funded INDITOL project will explore functional trade-offs of coastal marine fishes’ tolerance to hypoxia and warming to provide novel and important insights into the nature of fish populations in a more stressful world. INDITOL will use as a case study European sea bass, an emblematic coastal species.
