A series of models, methods and tools developed under the SQUID project assist software developers in ensuring the quality levels of software systems. SQUID's main achievement has been to provide a clear framework to support software measurement in the wider sense. Support is given for the definition of a company-wide measurement programme, and within it, for measurement programmes for specific software products. The approach draws on measurement, analysis and estimation methods developed earlier. During its development, close contact was maintained with the International Standardisation Organisation (ISO) committee responsible for the ISO 9126 guidelines, both to ensure that the SQUID approach met the requirements of existing and emerging standards, and that there was feedback from the development exercise into the relevant ISO committees. SQUID represents a first step towards developing software of stated quality at controlled cost. It will be of benefit to all organizations developing software products where quality is a key factor in success.
