Complete and optimize the PeachPie compiler technology to be fully compatible with the PHP language in order to increase the performance of up to 80% of the internet.

Project description

New internet technology integrates old with new

As companies evolve and adapt to modern technologies, their legacy applications are often carried over into their renewed environment, causing security threats or performance bottlenecks. Many of these legacy applications are written in PHP, a popular programming language that powers the majority of websites today. While the language is widespread, easy to learn and surrounded by a vast ecosystem, its design poses security risks and performance issues. On the other hand, the .NET Framework is a modernised high-performance language developed by Microsoft, offering enterprise-grade security and performance. The EU-funded PPCHP is developing a technology to smoothly integrate the two to allow legacy PHP applications to run on the .NET platform

Objective

PeachPie is a compiler and runtime of PHP on .NET. The PHP language powers over 80% of the entire internet thanks to its ease of use and simplicity. While .NET is more complex, it offers a significantly higher performance, security and stability. PeachPie combines the best of these two worlds, allowing legacy PHP applications to run on a more modern platform. Because .NET’s architecture allows applications to run on multiple processor threads, PeachPie enables PHP code to run on servers with a much higher throughput, consequently saving huge amounts of server resources. This may, in fact, lead to a lower energy consumption of the world’s largest companies due to resource savings. PeachPie is heavily supported by Microsoft and is the first project outside of the organization to be admitted into its .NET Foundation. The technology is offered open-source and free for anyone to use, but has monetization plans on top of the core software that targets enterprises and corporate entites.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

SME-1 - SME instrument phase 1

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Coordinator

IOLEVEL S.R.O.
Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
