Development and scale-up of cognitive detection and stimulation platform for dyslexia by using automatic learning and scientific validations in educational environments

Project description

Detecting and overcoming dyslexia while having fun

Dyslexia affects a significant percentage of the population, having an impact on children’s learning as well as on their emotional and social skill development. Despite its prevalence, dyslexia is frequently detected late – a fact that hinders effective intervention. The EU-funded Change Dyslexia project aims at screening children for dyslexia and providing treatment using scientifically based applications that combine artificial intelligence, computer games, linguistic studies and data analysis. The Change Dyslexia digital solutions will first focus on the Spanish-speaking market, with the potential to be developed in more languages.

Objective

Change Dyslexia is a social company based in Barcelona that gives a solution to a large-scale problem offering at the same time a response to market needs. Dyslexia affects about 10% of the population and it is related to high rates of school failure and excluded population, affects reading and writing but it does not affect general intelligence so people with dyslexia can learn coping strategies to deal with its negative effects. However, most frequently dyslexia is detected too late for effective intervention.

Change Dyslexia transform this situation by including and empowering children using scientifically based applications (protected by a files patent) mix of artificial intelligence, computer games, linguistic studies and data analysis, that screen and treat dyslexia at large scale with 90% accuracy (higher that other methods that are even longer and more expensive). As the competitors are especially strong for English market, Change Dyslexia first focus in the Spanish-speaking market that is less served and where the opportunity of social impact is higher. Compared to main competitors, this product is scientifically based, social, and the most complete to overcome dyslexia.

The social impact of Change Dyslexia is global and measurable. Worldwide, 100,000 children in 43 different countries had a free pre-diagnosis of dyslexia in only one year. Also, during 2017, 250 families benefited from a treatment scholarship provided by Change Dyslexia. By 2020 it is expected to have reached 500,000 children with the screener, provided 20,000 scholarships to families, and proven a decrease in the school dropout rate (Change Dyslexia is currently working with the Education Council of Madrid on a longitudinal evaluation with 100 schools). This way Change Dyslexia will become a reference for scientific and digital solutions for dyslexia.
