ERA Chair for Computational Imaging and Processing in High Resolution

Project description

New initiative to boost computational imaging research in Estonia

Computational imaging is an interdisciplinary field combining mathematics, computer science and physics. Algorithms for image reconstruction have important applications in diverse fields including microscopy, remote sensing, consumer electronics and biomedicine. The Center of Photonics and Computational Imaging at the University of Tartu(opens in new window) envisions becoming a centre of excellence in computational imaging. The EU-funding of the CIPHR project will enable the laboratory to boost the scientific knowledge of researchers and establish strong links with industry. The project will raise the profile of the University of Tartu(opens in new window) and open up new possibilities for multinational cooperation.

Objective

The aim of the CIPHR project is to establish the Center of Photonics and Computational Imaging (CPCI), a research unit within the University of Tartu (UTARTU) that will become a world leader in Computational Imaging, a sub field of photonics. We will establish this center by recruiting a leading expert in the field to serve as ERA Chair in Computational Imaging and Processing in High Resolution, who will in turn create a top-level research team capable of conducting cutting edge research that combines photonics with the computational power of computer science and optoelectronics.

Computational Imaging is a vastly interdisciplinary field; therefore, it has the potential to become one of the most important industries in the future, offering a multitude of applications in 3D imaging, remote sensing, image compression, consumer electronics, security and defense, microscopy and healthcare diagnostics. To account for interdisciplinarity of Computational Imaging, the ERA Chair will build bridges between several fields that UTARTU is already strong at: optics and spectroscopy, machine vision, remote sensing, electronics and informatics.

The ERA Chair will also establish strong links with the industrial actors, improve the quality of UTARTU's curricula and work to raise awareness about photonics and the benefits it can offer to society. As a result of ERA Chair's activities, UTARTU will achieve excellence in the field of photonics, develop an efficient system for research exploitation, improve knowledge and skills of future researchers by providing better education to them and raise UTARTU's profile among Estonian and international audiences.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

CSA - Coordination and support action

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
