Innovative synthetic bone biomaterials

In bone transplantation procedures, grafts are obtained from the patients themselves, from bone banks or even animals. However, all these sources present with various disadvantages associated with immune compatibility, availability and disease transmission. The scope of the EU-funded Bone3Dmatch project is to revolutionise the industry of synthetic bone grafts by introducing novel biomaterials. These biomaterials have a high water consistency and mimic natural bone properties, supporting bone regeneration and patient recovery. Importantly, they can be 3D printed to produce scaffolds tailor-made to individual patient needs, which will allow the treatment of complex bone defects.
