Novel Characterisation Platform for Formulation Industry

Project description

New platform offers high-precision analysis of colloidal particles

A colloid is a mixture comprising microscopically dispersed insoluble particles spread out evenly inside another substance. The particles are larger than the size of a molecule but smaller than particles that can be seen with the naked eye. Colloids are common in everyday life. Some examples include chocolate, glass, paper, paints or coatings. Particle characterisation is vital for commercial applications. The EU-funded NoChaPFI project will develop advanced techniques for fast and accurate measurement of the dynamics of particles suspended in a liquid. The new platform will offer incredible speed, reliability, and precision for particle characterisation.

Objective

We propose a novel platform for particle characterisation in diverse applications making use of colloidal suspensions. These are ubiquitous in applications across many sectors: agriculture, food, household and personal care goods, paints and coatings, oil, water treatment, etc.. In other applications, the role of suspensions is less obvious, but no less vital: molten chocolate is a suspension of sugar crystals in oil, while all ceramics start as particulate pastes (of, e.g. titania) before sintering. Particle characterisation is key to research, development and manufacturing in all of these industries. Our technique is based on the fast and accurate measurement of the dynamics of particles suspended in a liquid, which we have been developing in a current ERC Advance Grant. Our platform is unique in its speed, facility of operation and range of applications.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

THE UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH
Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
