Chip Architecture for Smart Cards and Portable Intelligent Devices

Objectif

The CASCADE project aims to produce a platform for a new generation of integrated chips for portable electronic devices.

The objectives of the CASCADE project are to enhance the architecture of the existing microprocessors used for chipcards and other portable intelligent devices to provide a new generation of chips for electronic consumer products. It targets the market of portable intelligence, especially for smart cards, interactive badges, and for secured portable intelligent devices such as PCMCIA cards. This new chip could be used in other domains like telecommunications and mobile applications.

The new architecture provided by CASCADE will have to adapt existing technology to the changing requirements of the market by:

- increased processing power to accommodate multi-service application and improved security features;
- creating a development environment for the new architecture, which allows the use of high level programming languages and thereby facilitating application developments.

The CASCADE platform will include:

- a new chip architecture, adapted to portable electronic applications, based on a 32 bit RISC processor, which will deliver high computing power with low power consumption and with small die sizes

- a multi-tasking operating system with strong protection of data in multi-service applications, taking into account emerging OMI standards for software portability
- data-compression functions to increase the on-chip storage capacity
- cryptographic facilities
- advanced low-cost biometry and neural net technology for powerful user verification
- software development tools for this architecture.
The CASCADE project will develop a new chip architecture starting from the ARM core, tailored for the use in portable electronic devices and, more specifically, Smart Cards. This architecture will provide specific on-chip features required in these devices, including:

- non-volatile memory (EEPROM of flash memory)

- physical security feature modules (eg Vcc low/high detector, temperature detector, low frequency detector, light detector, passivation layer detector)

- improved peripheral and memory management functions
- improved I/O functions to support higher level communication protocols
- integrated features for inter-and intra-application security.

CASCADE will provide demonstrators at the different stages to prove the feasibility of the concept and demonstrate the innovative features of the technology developed in the project.

The conformance with European standards will be evaluated during the complete project run. Existing and emerging standards (such as ANDF, VBI, VHDL) will be employed whenever possible.

An exploitation plan for the CASCADE project results will be elaborated in the initial phase and updated and completed at the end of the project.

Programme(s)
