ENHANCING WASTEWATER TREATMENT PROCESSES BY CREATING AN INNOVATIVE TURNKEY SOLUTION FOR MARITIME TRANSPORTATION INDUSTRY

Project description

Wastewater treatment solution for the maritime transportation industry

Organic waste in the maritime transportation industry is a serious problem as technologically outdated wastewater treatment systems are still being used. The result is that nasty smells are not eliminated in cruise ships affecting the offered services, while sanitary problems emerge in commercial vessels. The solution proposed will tackle organic waste components such as fat, oil and grease from the waste pipe system in ships and vessels. The product was tested in several pilot projects. The EU-funded WAIT IT project will conduct a feasibility study to offer a complete and efficient solution to organic waste management in the maritime transportation industry.

Objective

World’s population is about 7.7 billion. Every human being produces an average of 1.3 kilograms of organic waste every day. Organic waste causes difficult and costly challenges everywhere, where there are drain pipes. For example, cruise ships experience major problems due to organic waste. It builds up in drain pipes causing foul odors and blockages ruining customer experience, and at worst, causing fatal accidents.

ProtectPipe Oy is a microbiotechnology company. Our disruptive solution literally eats fat, oil, grease and other organic waste from the drain pipes leaving drain pipes clean increasing their lifespan and minimizing the risk of blockages or other sewer related problems. Our microbial liquid consists of five different kind of non-pathogenic microbial strains, which are all hand-picked and particularly chosen to eat different organic waste.

At the moment we have approximately 1000 customers in six different customer segments. In this project we will focus on a substantial and our most potential customer segment: Maritime Transportation Industry (MTI). MTI consists of 4281 active cruise ships, 52183 merchant and 5793 naval vessels. Our comprehensive solution for a single ship costs approximately €100,000. Thus, the market potential of the whole industry is huge. Wastewater treatment processes in the industry are old-fashioned. Therefore, we see that our solution fulfills the needs of our potential industry customers.

At this point, we have already conducted a several pilot projects with different cruise ships and naval vessels and achieved amazing results with our product. Many of the pilot projects have already led to permanent relationships with our customers. However, we still have not been able to create a comprehensive, breakthrough solution for our MTI customers. Thus, the purpose of this project is to conduct a feasibility study on enhancing wastewater treatment processes by creating a turnkey solution for maritime transportation industry.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
