Project description
Smart collaborative robots lend a helping hand
A robot’s powerful automated arm can weld, paint and assemble. While industrial and service robots are commonplace, these machines work at a distance from humans. Collaborative robotics is bringing robots and human workers side by side. The EU-funded SOPHIA project will develop a new generation of socially cooperative human-robot systems in agile production. The objectives are to achieve a reconfigurable and resource-efficient production and to improve human ergonomics and trust in automation, in hybrid human-plus-robot manufacturing environments. SOPHIA systems will be built on the basis of human work processes backed by decision support tools, assistive and interactive robots, and smart self-adapting workplace automation. SOPHIA will have a clear focus on standardisation of its advanced technologies at a European level. These enablers will help to boost competitiveness in European manufacturing, and they will also help reduce musculoskeletal disorders, which are the most common work-related health problems in Europe.
