AUTOMATED DIAGNOSTICS AND RADIOLOGICAL READING FROM LUMBAR SPINE MRI

Project description

Faster detailed diagnosis for herniated discs

Herniated discs are a major cause of disability from lower-back pain, with 10 million MRI spine exams scheduled annually in the US alone. The CoLumbo project uses an algorithm based on convolutional neural networks to read MRI images and automatically display the lumbar slices with herniation, including details of size, angle and displacement. The data is combined with information from patient questionnaires to provide diagnosis with a high degree of accuracy, as confirmed by radiologist reviews. CoLumbo’s AI online platform reduces diagnostic time for this painful condition and leads to faster treatment at a much lower cost.

Objective

CoLumbo is an innovative AI online platform for diagnosing herniated disc and other spinal pathologies, capable of MRI reading, and medical history analysis. The innovation is based on fully convolutional neural networks (FCNN) for MRI reading, and uses a specially designed patent pending algorithm to compensate for a smaller number of training datasets without loss of accuracy or reliability.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

SME-1 - SME instrument phase 1

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

SMART SOFT
Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
