Better screening for circulatory disease could improve wound healing in diabetics

Most people take wound healing for granted. The hundreds of millions of people living with diabetes do not. Diabetics face two intertwined problems, development of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and development of diabetic foot ulcers (DFU). PAD places diabetics at increased risk of developing DFU, further complicating its treatment and slowing down healing. An adequate blood supply to the wound is one of the most important factors in wound healing. VOTIS has developed a non-invasive imaging technique to screen the feet of patients with diabetes for PAD and related pathologies. It could reduce amputations and other consequences of reduced blood flow, improving the quality of life for a growing number of patients with diabetes globally.

Objective

Epidemiological studies confirm a link between diabetes and increased PAD (Peripheral Arterial Diseases) prevalence, and
diabetes is associated with a two- to four-fold increase in PAD compared to non-diabetics. PAD impedes resolution of small
surface wounds and is an important predictor of diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs). DFUs are a chronic complication of diabetes.
Recent studies suggest that diabetics have a 25% risk of developing a DFU over their lifetime, and when a person with PAD
develops a DFU, often the DFU will not heal. Therefore, the physician who examines a patient with diabetes and foot ulcer
should always assess the vascular status of lower limbs. Nevertheless, PAD detection and the assessment of its severity is
a clinical challenge in diabetic patients with foot disease, due to altered clinical presentation of PAD and limitations of the
diagnostic procedures: many methods analyse only the outer surface of the sk VOTIS utilises an innovative, non-invasive
and patented methodology to assess the physiological health of the lower limb even before tangible symptoms appear.
“Time is tissue.”VOTIS aims to promote necessary changes in the armamentarium for treating peripheral artery disease
(PAD), ischaemia and low perfusion rates in diabetics. These changes support detection and preventative healthcare and
will improve control over disease progression. This, in turn, will lengthen the path to necessary amputations and reduce
associated health consequences and their costs. Our business opportunity is very attractive, considering the growing
number of diabetics at risk for foot amputations as well as the limited ability of currently-available solutions to detect, locate,
and quantify the severity of peripheral artery disease (PAD). We plan to increase our understanding of international market
conditions and related risks. The current feasibility study will help us to deepen both our roll-out plan and our plan to scaleup
