New generation of polymeric films, LDPE-Graphene based, for industrial applications

Project description

New generation barrier coatings

Barrier coatings help provide properties such as humidity control, sealing properties and airtightness to products ranging from meat and medicines to building and textile materials. Materials currently in use however, often offer a limited performance, presenting also a risk to human health and the environment. The EU-funded GRAPHCOAT project affords a new generation of effective coating materials that are eco-friendly and economically viable. GRAPHCOAT is made of low-density polyethylene enhanced with high-quality and non-toxic graphene nanoplatelets. The new product has already raised the attention of many international clients in the field of industrial packaging, building insulation and protective clothing.

Objective

Barrier coatings and films are essential in many industries – like food/medical packaging, building or textiles – as a protection from moisture and bacteria, corrosion, heat, physical damage... However, the materials currently in use often offer a limited performance (e.g. plastics are not completely impenetrable), present a risk for human health and the environment (many metals and solvent-based coatings widely used as protective barriers are increasingly regulated for their toxicity) and/or show a growing trend of supply scarcity and price rise (unstable remote metal ores). A new generation of effective coating materials, eco-friendly and economically viable, is therefore urgently needed to improve the protection and safety of consumer and industrial goods.
Taking up this challenge, we present GRAPHCOAT, a ground-breaking multifunctional barrier film made of Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) enhanced with high-quality and non-toxic graphene nanoplatelets and manufactured with our proprietary extrusion coating technology. Through its unique compound formulation and exploiting the unparalleled features of graphene, GRAPHCOAT offers outstanding barrier properties, excellent mechanical strength, heat dissipation and UV absorption properties, among others. It allows a longer life for consumer goods, enhanced food and medical safety, and require less raw material compared to current barrier technologies.
Roncoroni is an Italian family-owned company with more than 50 years of experience in the lamination and coating field, and a consolidated customer base. Our new product has already raised the attention of many of our clients in the fields of industrial packaging, building insulation and protective clothing. Thanks to GRAPHCOAT, they will benefit from a last-generation, high-performance and sustainable range of products in their offering, that will lead them to long-term profitability. We, in turn, expect to reach +€13.7M revenues and hire 16 new people by 2025.
