Project description
Chicken feathers turned into excellent thermal packagingmaterial
For the poultry industry, feathers are a significant waste disposal issue and around 10,000 tonnes of waste feathers are produced in the EU every day. The feathers are usually converted turned into low-grade animal feed as the only viable disposal option. However, these feathers are made up of one of the lightest natural fibres found in nature and are excellent thermal insulators. The EU-funded pluumo project has developed a compostable sustainable packaging material made from feathers. It is the world’s first thermal packaging material made from surplus feathers, and is designed to protect temperature-sensitive goods during transport. It delivers excellent insulation performance while lessening our impact on the environment. Pluumo has been designed to match the performance of other leading insulation materials such as expanded polystyrene.
Objective
• Synthetic materials and plastics used in packaging and insulation products are destroying our planet
• At the same time, the global poultry industry produces every day 16.000 tonnes of waste feathers, which are not utilized effectively
AEROPOWDER LIMITED propose pluumo, the first fully compostable packaging material made from feathers. It is lightweight and has outstanding thermal insulation. pluumo is made from natural materials (feathers and a bioplastic binder) and is combined with sustainable external packaging materials (such as recycled cardboard or recyclable mailing bags) as a complete delivery solution.
