Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

Over the last years, the worldwide rise of terrorism came with a series of attacks that have migrated from critical infrastructures to public spaces, which are characterized by limited protection measures. A tendency has recently appeared to use ramming vehicles to target unprotected places of mass congregation.

Alice is a vehicles barrier specifically designed and capable of stopping an ill-intentioned vehicle that attempts to breach the security perimeter. Alice can be integrated in urban architecture as street design with multiple functions (plant pot/bicycle stands) reducing psychological and sociological impact related to artificial barrier.

The overall objectives of Alice are to realize and commercialize a barrier able to balance security effectiveness with social and political acceptability focusing on design aesthetics.

Work performed from the beginning of the project to the end of the period covered by the report and main results achieved so far

Main results achieved can be summarized in activities and results as follows:

· Study on the new structure that highlights an absence of dispersion after the vehicle impact

· Technical analysis of the barrier that underlined its capability of stopping the vehicle its easily lifting

· Market analysis has stressed the right market segment and the clear market niche position of ALICE compared to the competitors

· Economical/Financial Analysis has allowed an evaluation of future revenues and production costs

· IPR strategy has underlined the patentability of ALICE, offering also a further starting point to commercialize the innovation.

The results have been communicated on the web pages and through direct contact with market players

Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far)

The progress beyond the state of the art are:
· Innovative approach related to the neutralization of looming high-speed vehicle

· Possibility of easy relocation and manual removal

The expected results are:
· Market success

· Safer city without militarization of urban infrastructure

· Protection of citizens through street design

The potential impact will be to make cities safer, without distorting their appearance thus creating tension in citizens, but rather going to integrate the barriers within the landscape.
