ISOLA aims at developping an integrated system to deal with all security aspects in ships. The project focusses on cruise ships as the problematic is more complex, but the system can be adapted to other ships like ferries, ro-ros and cargos. Since the density of ships on the seas is increasing regularly (especially large cruise ships), the ships have become a target for malevolent and terrorist organisations. The new generation of ships need to be equipped with systems that enhance their protection against internal attacks, external attacks (in which piracy) and transport of people and assets participating in terrorist activities.
The overall objectives of the project is to develop a whole set of services that will participate to the detection and identification of security risks. This set of services is integrated to provide the security officer and staff with a comprehensive view of all these risks and the related information.
The project covers internal security (internal attacks or malevolent acts inside the ship), external security (external attack from Piracy or against the hull) and considers the ship in the overall security chain with Law Enforcement Agencies (exchanges of pertinent information).
During the second period of the project, the components were developed in version 1 and integrated to constitute the first prototype of the system (system V1). Pilot Use Case (PUC) 5 was performed in 2 steps: 1. step1, Cybersecurity tests in the shipyard in November 2021)d and 2. Cybersecurity tests for ISOLA platform (April 2022) to assess the level of protection. In parallel, a rehearsal was perform on a ferry around Salamina island (Athens, Greece) for PUC3 and PUC4 (internal security and external security faced to piracy and attacks against the ship hull). This rehearsal demonstrated that the components were working satisfactorily and commuincated between themselves. The first prototype is therefore considered as nearly integrated since the HMI is 80% developed. The second rehearsal and PUC3 and 4 were delayed until the next period due to the unavailability of the ship. Meanwhile, the integration of the second prototype continued and is nearly completed.
