Autonomous cranes based on computer vision and AI to increase productivity and safety on construction sites

Project description

Smart lift for construction site productivity and safety

Cranes are a staple in any construction site – from mobile cranes and truck-mounted cranes to crawler cranes and hammerhead cranes. Whatever the type, cranes are the main bottleneck at a construction site and the largest source of fatal accidents. The EU-funded AUTOSITE100 project is using AI to develop an autonomous crane system that will improve efficiency (increase productivity by 30 %) and boost safety. This new patented technology combines computer vision, AI (deep learning), machine learning techniques and aerospace algorithms with off-the-shelf hardware. The overall aim is to transform current cranes into high-efficiency autonomous cranes, providing decision-making tools for the management team.

Objective

INTSITE is an Israeli company founded in 2017 with the mission of increasing efficiency, profitability and safety in construction. Our objective is to develop Artificial Intelligence based systems for autonomous construction machinery. Over the last 2 years, we have developed AUTOSITE100 -Autonomous Crane System- that converts any crane into an autonomous machine and provides the management team with real-time site insight for improved decision making. Cranes are the main bottleneck of any construction site: despite hoisting 70 % of all materials and equipment, their efficiency is only 55%-65%. In addition, cranes are one of the largest sources of fatal accidents in construction projects (3,480 crane fatal accidents in the EU in 2017 caused by human error). Incorporating AUTOSITE100 into any crane will provide improved efficiency (30% productivity increase, 24/7 operation), increased safety (real-time detection of every fixed and moving object in the site) and smarter overall site management (real-time map updated and crane activity dashboard).
AUTOSITE100 is a patented technology that combines Computer Vision, Artificial Intelligence (Deep Learning), Machine Learning techniques and aerospace algorithms with off-the-shelf hardware.
Existing solutions in the market are far behind AUTOSITE100 and only work on improving either safety or efficiency, but none of them offers both in a single product, as we do. AUTOSITE100 goes beyond current solutions by using machine vision technology (Artificial Intelligence and Computer Vision). It transforms current cranes into high-efficiency autonomous cranes, providing decision-making tools for the management team and avoiding collisions.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

SME-1 - SME instrument phase 1

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
