THE ORGANIC FERTILISER FOR GENUINE, HIGH YIELD PESTICIDE AND CHEMICAL-FREE ORGANIC FARMING

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - BIOTA (THE ORGANIC FERTILISER FOR GENUINE, HIGH YIELD PESTICIDE AND CHEMICAL-FREE ORGANIC FARMING)

Período documentado: 2019-12-01 hasta 2020-03-31

Food security for 10 billion people by 2050 is one of the biggest challenges of this century: the only option is to increase the global yield efficiency and reduce the yield gap. The development of synthetic fertilizers has traditionally supported global population growth. Nevertheless, yield increases from fertilized crops come at a devastating environmental cost. The unsustainability of synthetic fertilizers, the growth in organic and sustainable farming, regulations and a social desire for sustainability has led to a desire for organic, sustainable fertilizer use. Current organic fertilizers that could provide a solution to these huge problems do not meet the needs of the agriculture market. As such, a novel 100% organic, circular fertilizer is required to provide this sustainable solution to agriculture. We have developed Biota – the organic fertilizer for genuine, high-yield pesticide and chemical-free organic farming.
The project highlighted the Biota Nutrient technology’s substantial potential owing to its ability to generate equivalent yields to synthetic fertilizers while bringing all the additional benefits of organic fertilizers.
The technical feasibility focused on the main challenges identified during our study and the development plan was designed to overcome them.
The commercial feasibility highlighted a large addressable market and identified Europe as the ideal region for expansion. The region is the largest market for organic agriculture, supported by favorable regulations pushing agriculture towards organic or more sustainable farming. The proposed work in Phase 1 of the SME instrument fits into our overall plan to reach the market by contributing the financial resources needed to plan a fast sound wider deployment of Biota organic fertilizers and its market uptake.
Biota competes with both chemical fertilizers and organic fertilizers, both plant and animal extracted. While chemical fertilizers have proven levels of performance across all different types of farms and crops, their sustainability, environmental impacts and duration of impact are key pain points for growers. Competing organic fertilizers, on the other hand, suffer from erratic performance and are difficult to use.
Biota goes beyond the current state of the art in 5 key areas: significantly improved crop quality, effective performance, circularity, duration of positive impact, positive environmental impact and sustainable agricultural production.
In 5 years, we aim to unblock an annual market of €18M in annual revenues, hiring more than 50 people to run our 100K tonnes plant and distribute our products all over the world.
