Project description
Preoperative planning tool set to revolutionise personalised spine surgery
According to statistics, one in three spine-surgery patients suffers from mechanical complications following surgery. Despite revision surgeries, the ideal sagittal alignment cannot be obtained in some patients. The EU-funded GAP SIMULATOR project is addressing the need for personalised analysis and surgical planning by developing the first revolutionary system for prevention of mechanical complications. GAP SIMULATOR's novel sagittal spinal shape and alignment tool can find use in preventive medicine and the treatment of spinal disorders. The system quantifies the spatial orientation of the pelvis, the magnitude and distribution of the lumbar lordosis, and the global spinopelvic alignment via pelvic incidence-adjusted radiographic parameters. After 5 years of commercialisation, the device is expected to account for nearly 0.96 % of the global spinal surgery devices market.
Objective
THE MOTIVATION & CHALLENGES
More than 1 out of 3 patients (>33%) have mechanical complications after spine surgery despite various efforts of calculation and planning. Approximately 50% of patients who experience a mechanical complication require a second intervention for a revision surgery, which negatively affects the patient’s well-being and causes increased cost and issues regarding insurance payments. Despite revision surgeries, ideal sagittal alignment still cannot be obtained in some patients. Therefore, to eliminate these negative outcomes due to the currently used population-based analysis methods there is a need for personalised analysis and surgical planning.
THE IDEA: GAP SIMULATOR
GAP Simulator is a novel sagittal spinal shape and alignment analysis method and application platform. GAP Simulator is used for preventive medicine applications and for the diagnosis and treatment of spinal disorders utilised in the fields of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Neurosurgery, Physiotherapy, and in related fields. The GAP analysis and planning system, uses relative angular values to denote deviations from the calculated ideal, and is the first revolutionary system developed for prevention of mechanical complications by personalised preoperative planning. GAP analysis quantifies the spatial orientation of the pelvis, magnitude and distribution of the lumbar lordosis and global spinopelvic alignment via pelvic incidence-adjusted radiographic parameters.
OUR MARKET: Spine Surgical Planning and Spinal Implants Market.
The global spinal surgery devices market was valued at €10.46billion in 2018, and is estimated to be valued at €14.35 million in 2024, witnessing a CAGR of 5.30%. GAP Simulator is expected to grab up to 0.957% of this market 5 years post commercialisation.
