Towards a new generation of EU peer-to-peer Energy Communities facilitated by a gamified platform and empowered by user-centred energy trading mechanisms and business models.

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - NRG2peers (Towards a new generation of EU peer-to-peer Energy Communities facilitated by a gamified platform and empowered by user-centred energy trading mechanisms and business models.)

Período documentado: 2020-09-01 hasta 2022-02-28

The main aim of NRG2peers is to support the uptake of a next generation of European peer-to-peer Energy Communities. NRG2peers sets up a gamified platform, supporting residential energy communities, to increase energy efficiency and to integrate a higher share of renewable energy. This, by combining behavioural-based support mechanisms for peer-to-peer (peer-to-community and peer-to-market) energy transactions. One of the main obstacles for peer-to-peer Energy Communities is users’ understanding and acceptance of collective actions in energy communities and benefits of smart grids. This is accompanied by the lack of user-friendliness, reliability - and therefore lack of credibility - cost-effectiveness, incentives schemes and regulatory and educational campaigns at the MS level. Also, calculation methods overlooking consideration of behavioural aspects, and demand response mechanisms and services, typically do not enable realistic prediction of performances and adoption of innovative technologies, thus hindering their market uptake. The NRG2peers platform will therefore inform and engage consumers about the potential of saving energy and CO2 emissions, as well as the monetization of such potential, while stimulating and leveraging responsible behaviour with clear benefits for the people, such as health, enhanced safety, improved local social relations, improved local social cohesion, as well as other benefits . The NRG2peers platform will furthermore make consumers aware of the benefits of collective action that have the potential to assist them in forming critical mass at the community level.

There is still a need for clear guidance, education, and support with respect to the methodologies and current practices for the set-up and take-off of successful energy communities, both on a local and at the EU level. Current practices and instruments to co-create, strengthen, make attractive and multiply energy communities, applied across Europe, clearly face several challenges. NRG2peers will set up a platform to gather knowledge, experiences and lessons learned from a set of recent H2020 and Lighthouse projects to ensure the next generation of energy communities to:
Become more a) reliable; b) user-friendly and attractive; c) cost-effective for the customers;
Become more a) self-sufficient and b) interactive for the grid, resolving issues such as access the grid and grid reluctance for the customers on the network;
Be compliant with EU and MS legislations in order to instil trust in the market and incite investments in energy efficient buildings;
Offer support in decision making, especially on adoption of RES, better purchases and guiding building users towards more sustainable behaviour patterns;
Increasingly reflect the smart dimension of the community;

NRG2peers has the following five measurable objectives:
1.Stimulating and enabling the co-creation, strengthening and widespread implementation of the new generation of peer-to-peer energy communities the EU.
2.Enhancing the new peer-to-peer energy communities to be more attractive, practical, reliable, understandable and desirable by a holistic and user-centred approach.
3. Making the new energy communities easily accessible for minimum 10.000 residential customers and a wide range of stakeholders
4. Demonstrate that collectively organized peer-to-peer energy-related actions are financially viable and attractive at the community level, by testing the NRG2peers approach and evaluating outcomes of ongoing, complementary
5. To foster the EU-wide uptake of peer-to-peer energy communities by motivating and activating EU interest groups and national certifying and standardisation bodies.

Proved energy savings at M18 can be associated to Level 1-3 of the NRG2peers platform via: 1) user behavioural change, i.e. due to information and awareness campaign about the NRG2peers project, its possibilities, and future applications, numerically assessed by the difference between energy consumption data in 2020 and 2021, i.e. in the Dutch communities, or 2) energy savings correlated to the new installations of PV panels (i.e. in Spain and in Italy). At M18, NRG2peers managed to trigger investments in community-led RES installations and production only in the Alginet and Perugia communities that equal to 38 GWh of RES production in one year. Overall, at M18, the NRG2peers project can claim of being able to save 0.05 GWh/year. In terms of investments triggered, 7,364.82 € of economic savings have been mobilized. A total number of 10.340 residential units emerge as the still ambitious plan of overall target number for the larger reach of the NRG2peers project. This number is still acceptable for the scope of reaching the involvement of at least 5.000 consumers per million euro of EU funding.
The demonstration communities engaged in RES production scenarios towards the end of the project, equal to 238.38 GWh/y thus resulting in primary energy saving projections (236.75 GWh/year) and planned investments triggered by the project of around 139 M Euro.
The first operational version of the platform will be proposed in D4.1 for testing in the Demonstration Communities. This milestone defines a quite important step in the progress of validation with the end-users, and consequently in the progress of achieving real energy and non-energy related targets.
Building upon the output of the Readiness Level Indicator Tool, the NRG2Peers Advisory App will enable users of the demo communities to test detailed recommendations regarding technical, financial, legal, and governance considerations for their own community via digitized information and recommendations for users of the Advisory APP. This will be built in an online, browser-based, and mobile optimized environment to maximize usability and accessibility. The task will involve creating an interactive user interface to navigate through the resources in the application as well as implementation of relevant data models and APIs to support integration with the first operational version of the Open Data Solution that will be proposed in D4.2 (M21), and ins full deployment in month (M30).
