Project description
European perspective of the 1592-1598 East Asian War
The Japanese invasions of Korea between 1592 and 1598 are known as the Imjin War. This war is considered of major interest in the East Asian world, and also attracted the interest of the European forces. However, there are no studies analysing how Europeans perceived this inter-Asian war. The EU-funded EURO IMJIN project will identify, transcribe, translate and analyse European records relating to the Imjin War, and for the first time, advance the potential to connect European and East Asian research on this war, opening new perspectives for European and East Asian scholars. EURO IMJIN will be based on an in-depth study of 17th century European literature.
Objective
This project will locate, transcribe, translate, and analyse European accounts of the East Asian War of 1592-1598 (“The Imjin War”), connecting European and East Asian research on the war and opening new horizons for researchers from both regions. The applicant is a specialist of seventeenth century European literature with four years experience teaching and researching Spanish literature at universities in China and Japan. The applicant will build upon his current skill set by receiving Asian history, language, and translation training with a unique team of specialists at the host institution (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona). This will provide him with a solid foundation for his future research trajectory on the literature of East-West encounters in Asia. Ultimately, the applicant aims to use this opportunity to obtain a permanent academic appointment back in Europe, bringing his knowledge and networks from Asia.
