Planning and Control System for Semiconductor Virtual Enterprises (PASSE) identified the problems preventing effective planning, scheduling and control (PSC) in companies with sites distributed world-wide. PASSE focused primarily on the microelectronics industry. The main weakness identified by PASSE was a lack of integration between, and the poor quality of, planning and control systems. The result is a poor performance in meeting customers' orders and an inefficient use of a company's capital assets. New software tools are being developed to aid in improving planning, scheduling and control in the microelectronics sector. The working group's expertize ranged from software producers through to users, and encompassed a range of disciplines. Their activities included: identifying the best technologies for PSC applications; highlighting options for accelerating the take-up of the technology; stimulating new ideas and identifying the next evolutionary steps; and creating a framework to help encourage further development of expertize and knowledge. Through their activities, a number of good shopfloor controllers were identified, but these were not reaching their full potential in controlling order flow throughout a company. New solutions were also required to be readily adaptable to the needs of individual companies and provide real-time information.
