Workable Languages

Objective

OBJECTIVES
End-of-the-century industrial change requires workers' knowledge and know-how to be continually updated. Because of their inadequate language skills, immigrant workers, or even unskilled native-speakers, have difficulty in following and taking advantage of organised vocational training courses. It is to address this problem that the partners in this project have decided to adapt technical vocational training courses to this disadvantaged group by paying particular attention to the language side of the training.

ACTIVITIES
The partners are constructing new training material based on the following principles: the importance of differentiating between technical and language trainers and their awareness of the problems of understanding languages; particular attention to be paid to languages in technical training courses; the necessary optimisation of co-operation between language trainers and technical trainers, and the improvement in the teaching abilities of these two types of trainers. Training material, educational content and methods will be developed to promote integrated, differentiated training for language teachers and technical trainers. This material will include a series of illustrative examples and pilot courses. A manual enabling the target group to visualise vocational methods which are only presented in written form in traditional courses is provided for trainers. Finally, a multimedia tool which aims to improve the technical language knowledge of those involved in training in a specific area will be developed.

PRODUCTS
Production of training material and material raising awareness of the problems of understanding languages which certain disadvantaged groups come up against for language trainers and technical trainers. Creation of training tools for immigrant or unskilled workers (manuals and multimedia tools).
